As part of the O&P Street Rehabilitation project, street lights within the project zone are being updated or, in many cases, added. In response to public concern for safety, the finalized lighting plan increases current lighting by 40% while still preserving the historic feel of the area. You may notice a new light fixture or foundation for a new light fixture near an existing light. In many cases, the existing light will be removed at a later time. Many of the new foundations are covered with orange drums. These drums are in place for pedestrian safety and will be removed once the light poles are installed.

When the new lights are operational, you may notice a significant increase in brightness the first couple of nights. Per DDOT’s policy, any existing street lights designated for removal will stay turned on until we verify all of the new lights are fully operational. Once they are deemed as such, the existing lights designated for removal will be turned off. We appreciate your understanding during this time.

Should you have questions regarding the lighting plan or a concern about a specific light near your property, please contact the project team at info@fixingOandPstreets.com. Be sure to include your address so that we may address your specific question or issue appropriately.

Location & Work

P Street:

3200 Block of P Street (North Side)

Installation of brick sidewalk, cobblestone, driveways (March 6-March 9)

Excavation of roadway, installation of GAB & PCC base (March 6-March 9)

Set Bluestones (March 6-March 9)

Installation of electrical manholes and conduits (March 6-March 9)

3300 Block of P Street (North Side)

Work on the 3300 block of P Street continues, but has slowed due to an unexpected snag. When the historic rails were removed, it was discovered that they were in far worse shape than expected, and many were entirely unusable. Replacing these damaged tracks required a change in scope and budget to the original contract so that new rails could be fabricated. We’re pleased to say that the fabrication process was approved and is already underway. As the Project Team awaits the arrival of these fabricated rails – estimated delivery to site is early April – work must continue on other blocks to keep the overall project on schedule. The Project Team continues to evaluate the quality of track currently being removed from other blocks. Should any of those tracks be in useable shape, the 3300 block of P Street will take first priority, and after the proper rehabilitation, those rails will immediately be installed.

The Project Team is doing their best to re-open any portions of the 3300 block of P Street, and recently one-quarter of the block was opened for parking and expanded through traffic. We will continue to look for ways to accommodate residential needs where we can, and thank you for your patience.

O Street:

3400 Block of O Street (North Side)

Removal of streetcar track rails, manholes and junction boxes (March 6-March 9)

Removal of cobblestones (March 6-March 9)

Excavation of roadway, installation of GAB and Geofabric material (March 6-March 9)
